FIRST TIMER?
Preparing for our Transformer Pilates class as a first-timer can be both exciting and a bit intimidating, but don’t worry – once you’re familiar with the basics, it’s a great workout! Here are some tips to help you get ready:
Wear Comfortable Clothing
Choose clothes that are comfortable and allow for movement. Tight leggings, a sports bra, and a fitted top are great choices. Avoid loose clothing as it can get in the way during exercises. We require grip socks for safety (especially to prevent slipping on the machine), if you need a pair we sell them in the studio.
Hydrate and Eat Light
Hydrate: Make sure to drink water before the class, but avoid drinking too much right before to prevent discomfort during the session.
Eat Light: Have a light snack if you need energy, but try to avoid heavy meals right before class to avoid feeling sluggish.
Arrive Early
Arrive at least 10-15 minutes early so you have time to sign in, meet the instructor, and familiarize yourself with our Transformer machine.Don’t hesitate to let the instructor know it’s your first class! They can provide extra guidance and ensure you’re set up properly.
Understand the Basics of Transformer Pilates
Our custom built Transformer machine features a sliding platform, springs (for resistance), and straps. You adjust the resistance using the springs, which can make exercises easier or more challenging. You’ll be doing various exercises lying down, sitting, or standing on the reformer, so prepare to move in different ways.
Focus on Alignment and Breathing
Pilates is all about controlled movement, alignment, and building core strength. Pay attention to maintaining proper posture throughout each exercise. You’ll be asked to inhale and exhale in coordination with your movements. Breathing is key to ensuring your muscles get the proper oxygen and support the flow of exercises.
Be Ready to Modify
As a beginner, start slow and don’t worry about keeping up with more advanced students. Let the instructor know if you need modifications for any exercises. If something feels too intense or uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to ask for a modification or take a break.
Keep an Open Mind
Pilates is about controlled, deliberate movement. The class might feel different from traditional workouts like cardio or weightlifting, so try to embrace the slower pace and focus on form. You may feel sore in new places (hello, core!), but that’s normal as your muscles adjust to this type of training.
Post-Class Care
After class, take time to stretch and drink water to help with recovery. The combination of flexibility, strength, and balance work in Pilates can leave your muscles feeling fatigued but worked in a good way. Don’t be surprised if you feel sore after your first class—this means your muscles are being activated in new ways!
Enjoy the Experience
Keep a positive attitude and enjoy the learning process. Pilates is about mind-body connection and gradually building strength and flexibility, so be patient with yourself as you get the hang of it!
By following these tips, you’ll feel more comfortable and prepared to have a positive experience during your first reformer Pilates class. Enjoy the journey!
